This isn’t the first time I’ve tried to let you know you can read my new novel, Crazy of Natural Causes, without owning a Kindle.

Before Crazy was selected as a KindleScout winner, I wasn’t knowledgeable, either. All three of my novels, and several of my non-fiction books, are available in a Kindle version, but, until my first ebook was released, I had no idea how easy it was to read books electronically.

Right now, I’m writing this blog on a Surface, the tablet I use for most of my reading and plug into a keyboard so that I can take it on the road and write about ballgames and the like.

A free app enables me to read Kindle books here. It also allows me to read on my cell phone and the iPod I generally use for music while I’m riding around and around my yard on my lawn tractor (which I will be doing in the next day or so). A Kindle book can even be read on a Nook, which is the ebook apparatus devised by Barnes & Noble that’s similar to Amazon’s Kindle.

I still read “real” books, by the way, but I’ve become a Kindle convert. Ebooks are inexpensive — mine, for instance, is $3.49 — and it really isn’t much different to hold a tablet in one’s hands instead of a book. My first novel, The Audacity of Dope, costs $2.99. My second, The Intangibles, costs $4.99. Both are also available in print editions for $16.95 each. A print edition of Crazy of Natural Causes will be available sometime relatively soon. It’s a matter of me taking the time to get that done, which is difficult because I’m reviewing my options regarding my fourth novel, Forgive Us Our Trespasses, and writing an early draft of a fifth, Cowboys Come Home. (I don’t think they should be in italics until they’re actually published.)

I almost always read a book while I’m eating alone at a nearby restaurant, or sitting on a bench waiting to meet someone, or just biding my time somewhere else. The first time I read a book on my tablet was at a restaurant. The second time, I forgot the Surface, so I decided, well, maybe I can read — I think the book was Jim Jackson’s Ant Farm — on my phone. That’s when I discovered that all the Kindle books I’d downloaded here had been sent automatically to my other electronic devices, via my Amazon account — and when I opened Jim’s mystery novel, I discovered that it would open to the place I was when I last read it on the tablet.

No need for a bookmark.

I also discovered that I could touch a word on the screen, and its definition would pop up for my convenience. Believe it or not, there are actually words, even in the English language, that I do not know. This is what impressed my mother because I bought her a Kindle so that she could read the books I do.

If my mother will read a Kindle, and grow to love it, anyone can and will.

The Kindle requires recharging much less than I do.
