Storm Roulette

The times, they are a-changing.

No, I don’t mean the technological age. The focus is much smaller. A hurricane is headed, well, not exactly this way, but close enough to fret. At the moment, my uncertainty is narrow in focus.

For instance, where will I be?

Laurens is unlikely to play a football game at Myrtle Beach, which is also likely to be a ghost town by the end of the week. The game has not been “officially” canceled, but as these words are written, I’m expecting it any minute.

Laurens Academy prophetically didn’t schedule a game Friday night. It’s a religious school.

Clinton is hoping to play for the first time at home and hold dedication ceremonies for Wilder Stadium’s recent upgrade. If the storm behaves and stays mainly over water, the game has a chance.

I had just about decided to head west this weekend to watch Furman play Georgia State in Atlanta, but then I awakened to see the latest weather surprise.

Presbyterian College, which had its first football game canceled by fears of the same storm that is now closing in on the Carolinas, has scheduled a makeshift home game on Saturday against Mercer, which is traveling from Georgia here.

Uh, weather permitting. Everything is weather permitting.

I’m reasonably sure I’ll be at the Clinton City Council meeting this evening. I’m likely to be taking some photos at a football stadium tomorrow. Thursday is a public meeting about a referendum. That’s well into the initial stages of “weather permitting.”

My current inclination is to go to the PC game if there is one on Saturday. My guess is that hurricane evacuators are going to have the capitalistic effect of increasing the going rate for hotel rooms in Atlanta.

If it was still Friday, I’d be making plans for Myrtle Beach. If it was yesterday, I’d be thinking I might be able to slip off to the Furman game. Now Mercer-Presbyterian, in a stadium just a few miles away, is looking pretty good.

Mainly, though, I’m hoping for electricity and wi-fi.
