Pre-Memorialized

“I got the Guide to Jesus in here! Nowumsayin’?” His exhortations were to three people sitting on benches. None responded.

This is Memorial Day, though it was my observation this morning that it has been pre-memorialized for our protection. Uptown was mostly vacant except for the café on the square where I take most of my meals and breakfasts in particular.

What few people were present on our town streets I likened to creatures who have wandered into unfamiliar areas because population has intruded upon their habitats. I have never seen a black bear here, but a couple of years ago one was wandering about, caught in whatever act they were in by numerous cell phones, and another bear was spied similarly in the city limits of Laurens a few weeks back.

A small number of people, which also include skateboard enthusiasts, are drawn to vacant city streets. They are people who, for one reason or another, feel uncomfortable with other people.

I realized for the first time that it is possible to recharge one’s cell phone at the base of city streetlights. I wondered how many people were with cells but without electricity. This is likely an example of over-analysis. Later, when I was leaving, a man was walking away from me, right down the middle of the street, saying, loudly, “I got Jesus right here.” As best I could tell, He was in his (or would it be His?) cell phone.

It almost made me want to look up Guide to Jesus on Amazon and see if there was a Kindle version.

Almost. I expect Jesus has many guides.

I think of many acts I never do. Either that or I think too much.
