GREENWOOD – As a practical matter, Laurens’ Tuesday-night visit to Greenwood was little more than a non-conference workout for the baseball playoffs, but the Eagles and Raiders are familiar rivals.
Greenwood (13-2) whipped Laurens (14-9-1) for the 2nd time – the 1st was on Feb. 18 – by 6th-inning run rule, 15-5.
The Raiders’ Jackson Martin belted home runs in the 3rd and 5th innings, and Owen Pridgen collected a single and a double, but Greenwood’s Elijah Tiller went 4-5 with three RBI, and Luke Godwin was 3-3 with a homer and three driven in.
The Raiders and Eagles battled almost from the 1st pitch. Greenwood scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the 1st inning off Laurens starter Josh Hughes, who walked leadoff batter Matt Murray, who then scored on a two-base error by 2nd baseman Hunter Nabors. T.J. Aiken scored on Luke Godwin’s sacrifice fly.
The Raiders’ two runs in the top of the 2nd were straightforward. Catcher Bennett Edwards singled to right, and right fielder Jaedon Goodwin homered to center field on 1-2 pitch from Andrew Driver.
Three more Raider errors — by Ben Willis at short, Mason Hamby in left and Jackson Martin at 1st base — led to three more Greenwood runs in the 2nd. Reid Guy scored on Elijah Tiller’s single. Murray and Tiller scored on Martin’s miscue.
Zay Pulley led off the 3rd with a pop-fly single to right, then advanced to 3rd with one out on a passed ball. Martin homered to center to pull the Raiders back within a run. Owen Pridgen lined a double, but Willis struck out and Edwards grounded to 1st.
Greenwood’s 1st five runs were unearned. Laurens richly earned its four.
Murray’s RBI single scored Driver, who had doubled, in the Greenwood 3rd. Jordan Hudson relieved Hughes with two on and two out. Tiller greeted Hudson with a single that loaded the bases, but Evan Avery popped up to Nabors for the 3rd out.
Godwin homered for the Eagles to lead off the bottom of the 4th, and that opened the flood gates to six Greenwood runs in the inning, courtesy of four singles, a walk, a hit batter and Laurens’ 5th error.
It’s not a typo. Both a Goodwin (Laurens) and a Godwin (Greenwood) homered.
Martin belted his 2nd homer to right field in the 5th.
Laurens sent five pitchers to the mound and gave up 16 hits, with only five of the 15 runs earned. Hughes took the loss. The winning pitcher was Driver, who filled his line with fives: innings, hits, runs, earned runs and strikeouts.
Westside visits Ed Prescott Field for a 6:30 p.m. Wednesday game, and Greenwood follows on Friday at 6.
