RADFORD, Va. – Presbyterian College was looking at rock bottom in the Shenandoah Valley until, in the top of the fourth and fifth innings on Saturday, the Blue Hose found their climbing boots.
Trailing 6-0, PC scored two fourth-inning and seven fifth-inning runs en route to a 13-7 victory in its baseball season’s final day. Catcher Dalton Reeves belted two home runs in the span.
Imagine two spigots, one running wide open and then being shut off, and the other turned wide open. The Blue Hose went up and down in order for the first three innings.
Radford scored a run and left the bases loaded in the seventh inning.
Reeves and second baseman Jack Gorman, who was 3-5, each drove in four runs for Presbyterian (21-34, 12-15 Big South). Ryan Ouzts collected three hits, as well.
Both head coaches spent the late innings getting last-game playing time for the seniors. PC’s Elton Pollock dispatched seven pitchers to the hill. Kyle Mueller (6-1) got credit for the victory. The first of Radford’s five pitchers, Ty Burton (3-7), took the loss.
Radford outhit PC, 16-15, and two Highlanders, Zack Whitacre and Avery Spencer, each got two.
On Thursday, the Blue Hose had scored 12 runs in the ninth inning of a 17-3 victory. They scored 34 runs in the three games. For the first time in 13 three-game series against a single team, PC won the final game.
Radford (10-45, 2-25) pinched in a 6-4 decision in between.
A dreary day ended dreary seasons. The starting time was moved up to noon. The action on the field belied the weather.
