The Red Devils have many holes to fill but ample seeds in the planter.
Identifying which of those seeds will sprout is the first task of spring practice, which ended with Clinton High’s spring game on Thursday, pushed back by the unprecedented length of the baseball season and to the track and field facility by construction at Wilder Stadium.

The senior class that washed ashore with a 13-1 season last fall had been riding a wave spotted first in middle school. Recently the waves have been landing close together, and a 10-0 junior varsity is next ashore.
As a result, Corey Fountain expects to put a fine team on the field Aug. 18 at Batesburg-Leesville, but there’s more construction to be done than at the stadium.
Asked what he thought, Fountain said simply, “A lot of work to do, man.”
This should be tempered with the knowledge that, in the entire history of football, 96.483 percent of coaches have said at the end of spring practice that there’s a lot of work to do.
You can’t look it up. (I hope.)
“It was fun to get out here and compete, and be in full pads,” Fountain added. “Great weather today. Great atmosphere for our spring game. We’ll watch the film, make some corrections. It’ll give us something to look forward to over the summer.”
Sixty-two participated. A few were banged up. Some just finished playing baseball two nights before. They played with separate teams, red and white, and lots of yards were gobbled up by both offenses. A fair amount of fumbles and dropped passes plagued both squads.
They looked familiar. They’ve just got a heap of helmet polishing left to do.
