Odds don’t favor Blue Hose

Presbyterian College hasn’t played Wofford in five years, and the historic rivalry isn’t what it used to be.

Since its heyday, the Terriers have advanced into the Southern Conference, while the Blue Hose have regressed into the Pioneer Football League, a non-scholarship entity. As such, the fact that Wofford is 0-2 and PC is 1-1 means little.

The Blue Hose haven’t beaten the Terriers since a 10-7 win in Spartanburg back in 1994. Wofford has since won seven straight as the games between the two have dwindled in number. What once was an annual game is now an occasional one.

Gibbs Stadium in Spartanburg is the site of Saturday’s 6 p.m. game.

Last week Presbyterian limited the outmatched Virginia University of Lynchburg to minus-8 rushing yards, the lowest total allowed by the Blue Hose in the Division I (2008-present) era and in FCS so far this season. The Blue Hose won, 48-17.

Wofford fell, 45-7, to Pittsburgh in its opener and 23-6 to William & Mary, a ranked FCS team.

Shawn Watson is in his first full season at the Wofford helm. He took over the team from Josh Conklin and went 3-3 in the 2022 season’s final games. The Terriers finished 3-8.

This is the final non-conference games for both teams. This is the 86th meeting, dating back to 1914. Wofford leads the series, 42-40-3.

Wofford defensive lineman C.J. Tillman began his career at PC. The Blue Hose punter, Ezra King, played three years for the Terriers. Mitch Doolittle, who played quarterback and wide receiver at Presbyterian, now coaches the Terriers’ outside linebackers.

The Clinton junior-varsity football team won its 40th consecutive game, defeating Chapman, 38-20, in Inman on Thursday night.

After a scoreless opening quarter, the Red Devils put up three touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 20-0 halftime lead and never trailed.

Jaydon Glenn and Noah Garrett each converted interceptions into touchdowns.

Rhett Gillan, K.J. Vance, A.Z. Simmons and Angelo Cromer all rushed for scores.

“We made plays when we need to make them,” Clinton coach Dontavius Glenn stated. “Our defense and special teams created some offense for us, and that was extremely helpful. Our kids are improving and working hard.”

Laurens (1-2) won its first JV game, taking a 14-6 victory over Union County at K.C. Hanna Stadium.

Jace Campbell put the Raiders on top with a 10-yard a 5:03 of the first quarter, set up by B.J. Hill’s long run. Diego Angeles kicked the extra point. The latter touchdown occurred as time ran out in the first half on Mar’Quis Copeland’s circus catch of a 40-yard throw from Campbell.

Quarterback Hayden Lawson put the Yellow Jackets on the board with 8:37 remaining in the game with a seven-yard rush.

Clinton (3-1) moved above the .500 mark in girls’ tennis with a 5-1 victory over Mid-Carolina.
