UNION — Somebody had to win.
Unfortunately for the Laurens Raiders, it was the Union County Yellow Jackets that prevailed, 20-17, Friday night.
Laurens (0-5) took a 17-7 lead to halftime, but the Yellow Jackets scored touchdowns in each of the final two quarters while shutting out the Raiders.
Quarterback Nick Danciu completed 15/27 passes for 135 yards but was intercepted twice. The Raiders rushed for only 47 yards. Union County (1-4) amassed a 299-178 advantage in total yards.
Josh Goodwin and E’Myus Young each caught four passes. Demari Lee Jackson and Danciu rushed for the Raider scores. Brock Franklin kicked a field goal and two PATs.
Cam Owens led the Yellow Jackets with 110 yards on 21 carries, scoring all three touchdowns.
Two Union quarterbacks, Qa Brannon and Keyshon Harden, combined to complete 15/27 passes, same as Danciu for the Raiders and for about the same yards (128).
The game was not without its controversies, according to social-media accounts.
Laurens visits Anderson to play Class 5A power T.L. Hanna, which can never referred to as merely Hanna because the Raiders’ stadium is K.C. Hanna, next.
Thornwell put a clear dot in its resumed football program, winning for the first time since 2007 over the aforementioned Clear Dot, 34-20.
The Saints are 1-3. The dots are gosh knows what.
Thornwell put up 297 yards of offense, 163 of them on the ground. Kaevon Washington, whose father, Charlie, is the Saints’ head coach, has 287 yards rushing in 52 carries.
Great Falls – the Red Devils, by the way – visits Thornwell next.
Led by senior Jesse Cleveland, who rushed for 184 yards in 18 carries, Wardlaw (3-1) defeated Laurens Academy (2-3), 30-6.
Addison Faust added 19 for 132, and the quarterback, Colt Bailey, was only 1/4 throwing but rushed for 57 yards in 10 attempts.
The Crusaders travel to Jefferson Davis Academy in Blackville next.
