Let’s see. Over the weekend, Clinton won big, Laurens lost big, Thornwell lost big, and Laurens Academy and Presbyterian College lost, uh, moderately.
The Red Devils’ 51-28 victory over Union County was not enough to restore them to the Class 3A top 10 in the S.C. Media rankings. Clinton (5-2, 1-0 Region 4-3A) received votes again, as it thrashed the Yellow Jackets after consecutive losses to Chapman and South Aiken. Wouldn’t it be interesting if Clinton returned to the top 10 without playing? Clinton’s week off is well timed as several more players should be fully recovered from injuries.
That leaves Laurens (0-7, 0-1 Region 2-4A) to visit Riverside (4-3, 1-0) in Greer, Laurens Academy (2-5) is also off, Thornwell Charter (1-5) entertains the Anderson Cavaliers (3-3), and last but not least, Stetson (2-3, 0-2 PFL) visits Presbyterian (2-2, 0-1).
At Bailey Memorial Stadium, there is a distinct chance of a 10-point spread. The Hatters have fallen by 10 to Butler (28-18) and Marist (34-24). The Blue Hose fell to Butler, 27-17.
Both Presbyterian and Stetson are private, church-related institutions whose sports teams are related to forms of apparel.
Moving on …
Clinton’s Kadon Crawford is not only the Laurens County Touchdown Club’s Player of the Week. He’s Player of the Week for the second in a row.
Corey Fountain calls the senior his “Swiss Army Knife” because Crawford has many utilities. He’s a tight end, a wide receiver, a linebacker and a special-teams dynamo. In a 51-28 victory over Union County, Crawford set a school record with 191 receiving yards amassed among seven receptions from quarterback Tushawan Richardson. Among the gains were a 44-yard touchdown and another 50-yard gain.
Crawford can also play quarterback if need be.
At outside linebacker, Crawford made seven tackles for loss, scored a safety on one of them, and plagued Union quarterback Keyshon Harden with three pressures and a sack.
Fountain stated, “Kadon continues to be a leader on and off the field. He is a great competitor, he’s everywhere on the field and his relentlessness rubs off on the other players on the team.”
Former Wofford head coach Mike Ayers is the speaker on Thursday at noon when the TD Club convenes at The Ridge in Laurens. Tickets for the luncheon are available at the door for $15.
