Blue Hose hang on at home

Tilda Sjokvist led Presbyterian with 26 points in a 65-59 victory over Morehead State on Saturday afternoon, but it took two free throws by the sophomore from Huskvarna, Sweden, with seven seconds remaining to settle the verdict.

The Blue Hose, who led 45-33 at halftime, went nearly seven minutes without a field goal at the end, and the Eagles crept within two points, 61-59, on a Veronica Charles basket with 1:47 left. The Kentucky school did not score again.

Bryanna Brady, Mara Neira and Sjokvist closed out Morehead State by hitting 4/6 free throws the rest of the way.

Three-pointers doomed the Eagles. Presbyterian (4-3) popped 11/20 tries. Sjokvist splashed 4/7. Neira also scored in double figures with 14.

Morehead State (2-4) was no slouch with the bombs, either, hitting 11/28. Melissa Secchiaroli led the Eagles with 22 points, hitting 6/10 three-pointers.

Neither team was efficient. PC forced 22 turnovers, and Morehead saddled the Blue Hose with 20.

Morehead State got off to a quick start, outscoring Presbyterian 23-16 in the first quarter and leading by as many as 13. That was the Blue Hose’ biggest margin, too, at 6:34 of the third quarter.

“I think [this] win is awesome for our program. It’s been a long week after playing three games with a quick turnaround for [Saturday’s] game,” PC head coach Alaura Sharp stated. “So many things went right, and so many things went wrong, but our body language, our consistency, our stick-with-it never changed. That is something that is such growth for our team.”
Presbyterian took control in the second quarter, taking the lead at the end of a 14-point rally. The Blue Hose pulled away and ended the half with a three-point buzzer beater by Ashley Carrillo.

PC’s lead was down to five points by the time the fourth quarter commenced.

The Blue Hose are back at Templeton Center for a game against North Carolina Central on Wednesday at 11 a.m.

Take a look at the stats here.

Some say they intend to make a contribution to keep the site alive. Several have done so recently. I reckon some just don’t get around to it. I used to list an address to send a check (DHK Sports, P.O. Box 768, Clinton, S.C. 29325). I finally got it through my thick head that not that many people write checks nowadays. For example, me. A more convenient means might be sending a reasonable amount to DHK Sports on Venmo.

Another way I can make a little is if you purchase my books at MonteDutton.net. They’re quite entertaining in spite of the fellow who wrote them. Two of my novels, Cowboys Come Home and Lightning in a Bottle, are available in audio versions. The latest, The Latter Days, is about baseball.
