Paladins caught in the Ivy

PRINCETON, N.J. – Furman got an Ivy League education on Saturday afternoon at Jadwin Gynasium.

It was unwanted.

Matt Allocco hit a go-ahead three-pointer with 4.2 seconds remaining to lift Princeton  (8-0) to a 70-69 victory over the Paladins.

The Tigers erased an 11-point deficit to snatch the victory.

After Furman (4-4) turned the ball over with 34 seconds to play, the Tigers followed three consecutive missed shots with offensive rebounds before Allocco drained the game-winning triple from the left wing.

Furman led, 67-58, as late as the 3:18 mark, but the Paladins committed turnovers on their next four possessions, and Princeton’ Caden Pierce buried a three-pointer at the 1:38 mark that tied the score. J.P. Pegues restored the Paladin lead with a driving layup, but Furman committed turnovers on its final two possessions, allowing Allocco to win the game for Princeton.

Along with all that, Marcus Foster, Furman’s leading scorer, went down to injury late in the first half.

Xavian Lee led Princeton with 24 points, while Pierce finished with 22 points and 15 rebounds. Allocco totaled 13 points.

Furman took a 28-27 lead into halftime and shot 50 percent from the floor in the second half to build a 65-54 advantage on Ben VanderWal’s free throw with 4:10 to go. The Paladins held Princeton to .358 shooting, 4/31 behind the arc, but the Tigers scored 28 points off 19 Furman turnovers.

Garrett Hien led the Paladins with 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Pegues added 14 points and five assists while Alex Williams totaled 13. Furman shot .490 from the field and held a 38-33 edge on the glass but connected on just 11/19 trips to the line.

The game could have been all-Furman but wasn’t. The Paladins outrebounded (38-13), assisted (13-11), shot (.490-.344) and three-point shot (.348-.129), but they committed seven more turnovers (13-6).

The lead changed hands 10 times. Princeton led for most of the first half, though Furman led by one at halftime.

A PJay Smith three-pointer quickly hiked Furman’s lead to four 27 seconds into the second half. The Paladins’ lead reached its height for the first time on two Tyrese Hughey free throws with 12:30 remaining.

The Paladins are back in action on Monday night when they travel to Fayetteville, Ark., to face the Arkansas Razorbacks. Tip-off at Bud Walton Arena is set for 8 p.m. EST and the game will be streamed live on SEC Network+.

Thanks so much for the recent contributions.

I used to list an address to send a check (DHK Sports, P.O. Box 768, Clinton, S.C. 29325). I finally got it through my thick head that not that many people write checks nowadays. For example, me. A more convenient means might be sending a reasonable amount to DHK Sports on Venmo.

Another way I can make a little is if you purchase my books at MonteDutton.net. They’re quite entertaining in spite of the fellow who wrote them. Two of my novels, Cowboys Come Home and Lightning in a Bottle, are available in audio versions. The latest, The Latter Days, is about baseball.
