SCHSL to release first pieces of puzzle

With changes looming, the next word from the S.C. High School League is widely anticipated but exceedingly normal.

Next week the League releases preliminary class and region assignments. It lays out a framework and then allows time for schools to appeal if they think their assignments unfair or impractical.

Predictions are out there on social media, but they are educated guesses.

Still to come are proposals enacting fundamental changes. At the moment, it’s just moving ahead with necessary details.

Clinton High’s Zaravion Johnson is playing for the state in Saturday’s Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas in Spartanburg.

Then he’s graduating on Tuesday morning.

Johnson will get a head start on his academic work when he enrolls at the University of Cincinnati in January.

Johnson’s teammate Kadon Crawford, who won the Doug Shaw Scholarship for his performance in the Touchstone Energy (North-South) Bowl, says he is talking with Newberry and Presbyterian.

It’s official. Laurens’ Jayden McGowan is to play with the Gamecocks in the fall.

McGowan entered the transfer portal after catching 80 passes in two seasons at Vanderbilt.

Presbyterian College kicker Mack Mikko has made the All-FCS freshman team (fourth team) selected by Phil Steele publications, and five Blue Hose made Steele’s All-PFL team.

Wide receiver Dominic Kibby made the freshman team a year ago.

Mikko, Kibby, Alex Herriott, Worth Warner, Carter Szydlowski and Brooks Russ-Martin were the PFL honoreers. Herriott, Kibby and Warner made first team, Mikko third team, and Szydlowski and Russ-Martin fourth team.

PC defends its Big South title in men’s tennis with road matches versus Middle Tennessee State and Georgia Tech in mid-January.

“Our guys worked incredibly hard all fall and now we are excited to shift our focus to our spring campaign,” stated John Collins, who is in his fourth season as head coach. “We have set a standard these last few years of playing a nationally and regionally competitive schedule that allows us to finish in the top 10 of the Carolina Region and be at the top of the Big South Conference and we look forward to keeping that standard.”

The PC men’s golf schedule includes five tournaments, culminating in the mid-April Big South Championship.

“We are looking forward to building off the success we had this fall with a very familiar spring schedule,” stated Thomas Addison, who is in his 19th season as Presbyterian’s head coach.  “We are fortunate to be able to play such prestigious courses and compete against very strong fields right here in the Carolinas.  This will be a great semester for Blue Hose golf.”

The 17th lacrosse schedule in PC history begins with a match against Stetson at Bailey Memoria Stadium  on Feb. 10.

Guard Kory Mincy is Big South Conference Freshman of the Week after scoring 11 points with three assists and two rebounds against Florida A&M.

The East Point, Ga., native has three double-digit scoring games this season. He averages 6.5 points while shooting .545 from the field.

Clinton High is not playing its scheduled Friday varsity games against Mid-Carolina due to a flu outbreak in the girls’ basketball team.

The games will not be made up.

McCormick defeated Thornwell Charter, 60-3 in the girls’ game and 76-10 in the boys’ game, on Tuesday night.

The Saints take on Calhoun Falls Charter at home on Friday night.

I’m thankful for your support, whether by advertising, contributing or reading.

Thanks so much for the recent contributions. I’m aware that folks appreciate what I do.

I used to list an address to send a check (DHK Sports, P.O. Box 768, Clinton, S.C. 29325). I finally got it through my thick head that not that many people write checks nowadays. For example, me. A more convenient means might be sending a reasonable contribution to DHK Sports on Venmo.

Another way I can make a little is if you purchase my books at MonteDutton.net. They’re quite entertaining in spite of the fellow who wrote them. Two of my novels, Cowboys Come Home and Lightning in a Bottle, are available in audio versions. The latest, The Latter Days, is about baseball.
