Good news? Win streak! Bad news? Gamecocks are next!

It’s a bold basketball team that wins on Friday night, then sets out on Saturday morning to play the No. 1-ranked team in these United States.

General Custer was bold.

On the heels of the Blue Hose’ 63-52 victory over South Carolina State at Templeton Center on Friday night, PC plays top-ranked South Carolina in Columbia on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Quite the wake-up call.

Don’t look now, but Presbyterian has won six women’s basketball games in a row.

Enjoy.

Tilda Sjokvist led the way. She was 7/13 overall and 3/6 from long range. Bryanna Brady, 6/11 from the floor and 4/4 from the line, added 16. Mara Neira scored 15 points, grabbed four rebounds and had four steals.

No PC team has won six in a row since 2012-13.

“S.C. State played a great game,” stated PC head coach Alaura Sharp. “Our team really responded at halftime. Usually our assist total shows you how our offensive end is going. We had three assists at halftime, but had nine in the second half, and I think that shows that we came out of the locker room really well.”

Presbyterian (8-3) scored the game’s first five points and led 10-8 at quarter’s end.

S.C. State (1-11) then scored the first 12 points of the second quarter. The Blue Hose overcame a 10-point deficit to lead 23-22 at halftime, thanks to Neira’s three-pointer to end it.
Neira also opened the second half with a trey, but S.C. State scored 10 of the next 11 points to take a 32-27 lead. Once again, the Blue Hose reeled in the Bulldogs and built a 47-39 lead after three periods.

It never got closer in the fourth quarter.

Morgan Beacham led SCSU with 14 points, and Tiniya McGowan added 12.

The closeness of the standard stats was startling. PC and SCSU shot about the same from the field (State, .421-.415) and the line (PC, .818-.786).

The Blue Hose outrebounded the Bulldogs, 32-26, and forced 17 turnovers while committing 13.

Take a look at the stats here.

The PC men also face a stern test on Saturday, though not as stern as the women in Columbia. At Templeton Center, Quenton Ferrell’s team takes on Kennesaw State at 2 p.m.

Presbyterian is 7-4, with victories over Vanderbilt, The Citadel and VMI, among others. Kennesaw State is 7-3 with victories over UNC Asheville, USC Upstate, Georgia Southern and Georgia State, among others.

The Blue Hose have already won two more games than all last year.

Thanks so much for the recent contributions. I’m aware that folks appreciate what I do.

I used to list an address to send a check (DHK Sports, P.O. Box 768, Clinton, S.C. 29325). I finally got it through my thick head that not that many people write checks nowadays. For example, me. A more convenient means might be sending a reasonable contribution to DHK Sports on Venmo.

Another way I can make a little is if you purchase my books at MonteDutton.net. They’re quite entertaining in spite of the fellow who wrote them. Two of my novels, Cowboys Come Home and Lightning in a Bottle, are available in audio versions. The latest, The Latter Days, is about baseball.
