Ever since Presbyterian College began playing Big South Conference basketball games this season, the problem has been winning at home until Saturday.
The Blue Hose fell to Gardner-Webb at both Templeton Center (women) and Paul Porter Arena (men). Gardner-Webb bettered the Blue Hose, 72-58, in Clinton, and, 76-60, in Boiling Springs, N.C.
In both cases, Presbyterian entered the game with a better record.
Gardner-Webb (2-14, 1-2 Big South), won every quarter but the first in the women’s game, led by Ashley Hawkins with 19 points. Micahla Funderburk and Anaya Harris each chipped 10 into the till.
The Bulldogs outshot the Blue Hose across the board: .410-327 field goals, .261-.222 triples and .941-.667 free throws. They won the boards, 38-35, led by Ramatoulaya Keita with seven.
Bryanna Brady cleaned up inside, leading Presbyterian (11-8, 2-2) with 19 points on 6/11 shooting from the floor and 7/8 at the line. Dennaye Hinds led the Blue Hose rebounders with seven.
Mara Neira added 14 points and Tilda Sjokvist scored nine.
PC shot less than 30 percent (9/31) in the second half while GWU was burying 17/30 (.567).
“We’re a really good basketball team, but when shots aren’t falling, we have to dig in deep. That’s where your toughness comes to the top,” Presbyterian head coach Alaura Sharp stated.

It wasn’t much fun on the road, either. Gardner-Webb (6-12, 1-2) doubled up the Blue Hose, 48-24, in the first half and cruised in from there.
Presbyterian (9-10, 1-3) shot an anemic .395 (17-43) overall and .231 (3-13) from the three-point reaches. The Blue Hose were credited with only four assists and committed 19 turnovers. Most games their greatest asset is points in the point. The Bulldogs beat them there, 40-20.
Samage Teel led PC with 14 points, one more than Marquis Barnett. Trevon Reddish-Rhone snagged a game-high nine rebounds.
Six more players scored between three and eight points. The two leading scorers combined for nine turnovers.
D.Q. Nicholas led Gardner-Webb with 17 points, and Julien Sourmaoro added 15. Caleb Robinson had 10 points and seven rebounds.

PC opened women’s tennis team in Charlotte, N.C., with a 6-1 victory over Queens.
Coach Joel Roberts termed it “great stuff from the girls.”
“They came out with a lot of energy and were able to keep it up the entire match,” he added. “Loved the way we competed.”
The Blue Hose won everywhere but at No. 1 singles in their first-ever match against the Royals.
In Bristol, Tenn., King came from behind to defeat PC, 28-20, in women’s wrestling.
The Tornado captured the final five bouts that were unsettled by forfeit.
The Blue Hose headed to Kentucky to take on Campbellsville on Sunday at 3 p.m.
Men’s wrestling dropped a couple matches on the neutral mat of Davidson College, falling, 50-6, to Little Rock and, 31-11, to Cleveland State.
Presbyterian (1-7) lost its sixth straight match.

Thanks so much for the recent contributions. My goal is to provide unique coverage of local sports. I’m aware that folks appreciate what I do, particularly the kids, coaches, parents and fans.
I used to list an address to send a check (DHK Sports, P.O. Box 768, Clinton, S.C. 29325). I finally got it through my thick head that not that many people write checks nowadays. For example, me. A more convenient means might be sending a reasonable contribution to DHK Sports on Venmo. It’s keep it going, and by that I mean in business and also on the road.

Another way I can make a living is if you purchase my books at MonteDutton.net. They’re quite entertaining in spite of the fellow who wrote them. Two of my novels, Cowboys Come Home and Lightning in a Bottle, are available in audio versions. The latest, The Latter Days, is about baseball. I’m closing in on a 10th novel.
