RADFORD, Va. – For the first time this season, Presbyterian played men’s and women’s basketball games on the same day at the same place.

Radford University lives in infamy at least until the Blue Hose and Highlanders play again in Clinton on Feb. 10.

Quenton Ferrell’s men fell by 15 points. Alaura Sharp’s women landed 10 points worse.

Based on a small sample, Donald N. Dedmon Center is not a venue suited to Blue Hose shooters.

DaQuan Smith, with 19 points and five three-pointers led the Highlanders to a 73-58 Big South victory in the men’s game, which was the latter of two between the schools.

Kenyon Giles and Brian Antoine followed with 17 points and 13, respectively.

Presbyterian (9-13, 1-6) was dominated on the boards and could’ve shot as well with slingshots. Samage Teel scored 17 points. Trevon Reddish-Rhone added 13. The two were a combined 11/19 from the field. The rest of the team was a combined 8/35.

Justin Archer led Radford’s 38-29 assault on the boards with nine rebounds. Jonah Pierce led the Hose with six.

Radford (13-9, 3-4) scored the game’s first five points and took an 11-point lead at the 14:26 mark of the first half. PC got back to within seven, but Radford’s 10-2 run hiked the lead back to 15. The Highlanders settled for a 43-36 lead at halftime.

The Highlanders also scored the first five points of the second half. After back-to-back buckets by Kaleb Scott and Reddish-Rhone, PC got back to within eight points (50-42) with 17:39 to play but never got closer.

The Blue Hose, losing their sixth Big South game in a row, shot just .352 from the floor, though a respectable .368 from three-point territory. Radford shot .519 and .360, respectively. The teams were almost equally proficient at the free-throw line.

The Blue Hose return to Templeton Center to play USC Upstate on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

PC’s shooting was even worse in the women’s 65-40 loss. Radford won every quarter but the second.

Pa’Shence Traylor-Walker scored 19 points, largely based on hitting 5/9 triples, to lead Radford (10-11, 6-1). Taniya Hanner concentrated her 16 points inside, where she also found 10 rebounds to snag. Ashlyn Traylor-Walker, undoubtedly related to Pa’Shence, added 13 points and spread seven assists around.

PC’s leading score was Bryanna Brady with 12 points. Natalie Herrin chipped in 11. Mara Neira had eight rebounds. Tilda Sjokvist had four assists.

Presbyterian (12-10, 3-4) shot .298 (14/47) overall and .143 (2-14) from deep. The Blue Hose hit 10/14 (.714) from the free-throw line, but the Highlanders sank 10/12 (10-12).

Radford bombed the Blue Hose, 19-6, after the first quarter. Herrin scored the first basket of game, which was why PC led for 15 seconds. The Hose got within eight (24-16) at half, but the Highlanders blitzed them 23-12 in the third quarter and 41-24 in the latter half.

Radford scored 15 points off 18 PC turnovers. PC scored two off the Highlanders’ eight.

Thanks so much for the contributions. I’m aware that folks appreciate what I do, particularly the kids, coaches, parents and fans.

Blue, Green, Purple & Red cannot solely be funded by advertising. There’s not enough room.

I used to list an address to send a check (DHK Sports, P.O. Box 768, Clinton, S.C. 29325). I finally got it through my thick head that not that many people write checks nowadays. For examplw, me. A more convenient means is sending a contribution to DHK Sports on Venmo. It keeps the site going, both in the balance sheet and on the road.

Support the advertisers, and help keep the site – the game stories, the blogs, the photos – alive. If you choose, make a monthly donation via Patreon. The Laurens County site is here. The Furman site is here.

Or, indirectly, purchase my books at MonteDutton.net. They’re entertaining in spite of the fellow who wrote them. Two of my novels, Cowboys Come Home and Lightning in a Bottle, are available in audio versions. The latest, The Latter Days, is about baseball. I’m closing in on a 10th novel.
