After a couple raucous road games, Furman returns to Timmons Arena with righting an old wrong in mind.

The Paladins have won six of their last seven games leading up to Sunday’s nationally televised game against UNC Greensboro at 2 p.m. on ESPNU.

Furman (12-10, 6-3 SoCon) won a thrilling 82-79, come-from-behind, victory in overtime on Wednesday night at The Citadel. Furman trailed by 18 points in the first half before rallying to grab a late lead. Facing a 72-69 deficit with under 10 seconds remaining in regulation, Furman rebounded a missed Bulldog free throw and junior J.P. Pegues drained a three-pointer with 0.8 seconds left to force overtime.

The Paladins limited The Citadel to just 1/8 shooting in the extra period to grab their third road victory of the season. Marcus Foster led the way with 17 points, a career-high 15 rebounds, and career-best seven assists. Pegues added 16 points and fellow guard PJay Smith finished with 15.

Foster, who has posted four double-doubles in his five games since returning from injury, leads the Paladins, averaging 19.3 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. Pegues has contributed 16.6 points per game while forward Alex Williams has delivered 15.9 per game and shot .405 from three-point range.

Furman has won four straight games at Timmons Arena and its last nine SoCon games in the facility, dating back to an overtime loss versus UNCG last January. The Paladins are 60-8 versus SoCon opposition on their home floor since the beginning of the 2015-16 season and have won 29 of their last 32 SoCon games at Timmons.

Sunday’s game marks the 46th all-time meeting between the Paladins and Spartans with UNCG holding a 24-21 series lead. The Spartans, behind 17 points apiece from Keyshaun Langley and Donovan Atwell, downed the Paladins, 79-68, in the SoCon opener for both schools on Jan. 3 at Greensboro Coliseum. Furman played the first meeting without its top three scorers due to injury. Carter Whitt paced the Paladins in the loss with 23 points and six assists.

In addition to the ESPNU broadcast, fans can listen to the action on The Fan Upstate at 97.7 FM and 1330 AM in Greenville, on 97.1 FM and 1490 AM in Spartanburg, or via the Audacy app. Links for the video stream, audio feed, and live statistics are available at FurmanPaladins.com.

Furman will celebrate “Hall of Fame Weekend” versus UNC Greensboro. Former softball pitcher Lindsey Bert, football standout Dakota Dozier, and soccer great Walker Zimmerman, who were inducted into the Furman Athletics Hall of Fame on Friday evening, will be recognized during the game.

Saturday afternoon in Chattanooga, Tenn., wasn’t the Furman women’s idea of a lovely weekend.

Raven Thompson scored 17 points and Chattanooga used hot shooting and a strong first half to pull away from Furman on the way to a 79-62 victory in Southern Conference women’s basketball playat McKenzie Arena.

In earning their eighth straight victory, the Mocs (19-3, 6-0 SoCon), who entered the contest leading the SoCon in field goal percentage and three-point shooting by wide margins, did nothing but help those spreads by shooting .592 from the field (29/49), including 7/15 (.467) from three-point range.

Thompson knocked down 7/9 shots and all three free throw attempts for her 17 points.  She was followed by Hannah Kohn, who converted 6/8 field goal attempts, including 4/6 from beyond the arc, to finish with 16 points.

Jada Session paced Furman (12-11, 2-5) with a game-high 19 points after being forced to carry the bulk of the Paladins’ inside-scoring load when starting center Kate Johnson exited the game due to injury just four minutes into the second quarter.

Jaelyn Acker was the only other Paladin to reach double figures, establishing a season-high 12 points.

Chattanooga blistered the nets in the first half, connecting on 16/23 shots (.696) to grab a 43-29 lead.

Furman scored the first seven points of the second half to cut UTC’s advantage to 43-36 on a Session jumper, but Thompson converted a three-point play on the ensuing possession to give the Mocs a 46-36 lead with 5:41 remaining in the third period.

A Sydney James triple with 8:02 to go in the game pulled Furman to within 59-51, but Chattanooga answered with two baskets to push the advantage back to double digits.

Session also topped Furman with eight rebounds as the Paladins finished with a 27-24 edge on the glass.

Furman returns home for three straight games at Timmons Arena, starting Thursday with a 7 p.m. matchup against UNC Greensboro.

Thanks so much for the contributions. I’m aware that folks appreciate what I do, particularly the kids, coaches, parents and fans.

Blue, Green, Purple & Red cannot solely be funded by advertising. There’s not enough room.

I used to list an address to send a check (DHK Sports, P.O. Box 768, Clinton, S.C. 29325). I finally got it through my thick head that not that many people write checks nowadays. For example, me. A more convenient means is sending a contribution to DHK Sports on Venmo. It keeps the site going, both in the balance sheet and on the road.

Support the advertisers, and help keep the site – the game stories, the blogs, the photos – alive. If you choose, make a monthly donation via Patreon. The Laurens County site is here. The Furman site is here.

Or, indirectly, purchase my books at MonteDutton.net. They’re entertaining in spite of the fellow who wrote them. Two of my novels, Cowboys Come Home and Lightning in a Bottle, are available in audio versions. The latest, The Latter Days, is about baseball. I’m closing in on a 10th novel.
