
The Super Bowl is Sunday. Nothing else matters much … on Sunday.
I’ve seen every Super Bowl on TV. The first one was when I was eight. For most of two decades, I watched it while I was at Daytona Beach for the 500. The closest was when the New England Patriots beat the Philadelphia Eagles in Jacksonville. I was watching on TV at a condo in Ormond Beach.
It’s a rare Saturday at Templeton Center as Presbyterian College hosts Radford in both women’s and men’s basketball, beginning at 2 p.m., for Letterwinners Day.
Former players are to be honored at halftime of both games.
The men’s team is riding a two-game home winning streak, most recently defeating Gardner-Webb, 77-75, at Templeton on Wednesday night. The Blue Hose take the floor at approximately 4:30 p.m.
Quinton Ferrell’s men have won consecutive home game with a road loss to High Point in between. PC (11-14, 3-7 BSC) fell to Radford (13-11, 3-7), 73-48, on the road, 73-58, on Jan. 27.
Behind four double-figure scorers and timely free throw shooting, the Blue Hose defeated the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs, 77-75, at Templeton Center on Wednesday. With the win, the Blue Hose ended Gardner-Webb’s six-game winning streak.
PC leads the Big South Conference in field goal percentage at .476 (682/1,433) and has shot .500 or better 10 times. The Blue Hose shot .574 percent in the win over USC Upstate on Jan. 31. Marquis Barnett leads the team with 14.4 points per game.
Saturday’s game is the 32nd meeting between Presbyterian and Radford, which leads the series, 22-9.

On the other hand, Alaura Sharp’s women have lost four Big South games in a row and six out of seven.
Radford has a 7-2 Big Southrecord with wins over High Point, Longwood, Winthrop, Gardner-Webb, Asheville, USC Upstate and Presbyterian. The Highlanders have averaged 58.5 points per game and 35.8 rebounds per game. Sophomore guard Ashlyn Traylor-Walker leads the team with 16.4 ppg.
Saturday marks the 37th time that these two teams have met since Presbyterian joined Division I in 2007. Radford (11-12, 7-2)) leads the all-time series between the two teams 27-9.
As a team, Presbyterian (12-13, 3-7) leads the conference with 13.5 assists per game, an 0.8 assist-to -turnover ratio, and a plus-2.7 rebounding margin.

Laurens Academy (22-1) defeated Wardlaw, 35-24, on Friday to advance into the region tournament finals.
The Crusaders survived on off-shooting night as Rylee Ballard was the only double-figure scorer with 10 points. She cashed in just 3/16 shots. She hit 3/10 triples and 1/2 triples. Rylee Ballard scored seven points on 3/11 shooting, and Sadie Bruyere went 3-9 to score seven, also. LA, as a team, hit 14/41 shots for a .341 percentage.
Other LA scorers were Emily Suttles (4), Hannah Ervin (3), Abby Howard (2) and Madisyn Graham (2).
Wardlaw (6-9) got 12 points from Katherine Trotter.
Our Lady of the Rosary sure made life hard for the Laurens Academy boys’ basketball team.
At the region tournament in Johnston on Thursday, the Greenville school defeated the Crusaders for the third time, all in close games.
The Lions won, 36-34, on Tuesday. The Crusaders had a chance to put the game into overtime but couldn’t get a shot off.
Brandon Burke led LA with 12 points, followed by Garrett Murphy (6), Evan Asalone (6), Garrison Vaughn (5) and Jared Willard (5).

Laurens and Clinton were similarly successful on the wrestling mats this winter. Both finished second in their regions and grappled in the playoffs.
The Red Devils fell to Palmetto in the Class 3A playoffs, 48-36. In its second season of competition, Clinton finished 16-8 and is taking part in the individual state championship at Powdersville on Feb. 17.
The Raiders lost to Catawba Ridge in the 4A playoffs. Ka McCall, Jordan Miles, Dakota McCall, Leyden Gentry, Gage Kemph and Michael Brown were all-region.
The Thornwell Charter girls wound up with a second victory in their final game as they upended Dixie Charter, 25-17, to finish 2-11 in their first season.
Thornwell overcame a 11-8 deficit at the end of the former half. The victory was a result of outscoring the Green Hornets, 12-2, in the fourth quarter. Jessie Pitts scored 15 points, nine of which were in the final eight minutes. Also scoring were Karleigh Porter (4), Keyln Spurgeon (4) and MaKenzie Godfrey (2).
Dixie stung the Saints, 41-18, in the boys’ game after leading 22-2 at halftime. Thornwell saved some face by outscoring Dixie, 14-5 in the fourth quarter.
