Is it me, or did the Blue Hose’ 52-point loss to South Carolina seem a bit less painful when the Gamecocks pulverized the Tar Heels by 47?
It’s been a minute since I’ve seen a pure shooter like Oakland’s Jack Gohlke. Emphasis on pure. He’s the basketball version of a placekicker.
When’s the last time a ticket was actually punched?
Refereeing basketball is tough. Can you imagine how hard it is not to call everything but let a consistent amount of contact go? Meanwhile, the people in the stands and standing in front of the benches are evenly divided between “let ‘em play!” and “call the foul!”
On to the latest adventures of the Blue Hose …

In Daytona Beach, Fla., on Sunday afternoon, Presbyterian College’s men’s basketball team played among the sillier postseason games ever devised … and almost won it.
The Blue Hose lost an 82-79 decision, in overtime, against the University of Montana in the Ro College Basketball Invitational and Daytona Beach Center.
Regulation was just as close.

As a result, the Grizzlies (24-11) remain alive in the CBI, for what that’s worth, and PC, instead of finishing with a record of 14-18, finishes with a record of 14-19. The Blue Hose played in it because they were inexplicably invited, and to their credit, made the best of another game.
It was a good game.

Montana’s Aanen Moody and Presbyterian’s Samage Teel combined to score 62 points. Moody hit 14/21 shots and 6/9 three-pointers for 34. Teel converted 11/18 altogether, 3/5 from long range and 4-5 at the foul line for 28.
The teams exchanged baskets over the first few minutes of overtime. With 1:40 on the clock, Kory Mincy connected on a three from the wing, giving the Blue Hose a 74-73 lead.

Montana scored five straight points, regaining the lead for good. PC cut Montana’s lead to one point a couple of times but the Grizzlies converted on four free throws in the final 20 seconds to close out the game.

Teel scored a career high with his 28 points. During the game, he scored his 1,000th career point. Jonah Pierce scored 11 points and grabbed five rebounds. Kaleb Scott scored nine points and grabbed six rebounds.
In addition to Moody’s 34, Josh Vazquez added 15 and Te’Jon Sawyer 10. The game’s high rebounder was the Grizzlies’ Laolu Oke with 11.
Presbyterian scored 48 points in the paint with 28 fast-break points. Montana had 42 and 13.

Montana led by as many as 10 points in the first half, but PC got back within one, 37-36, at halftime.
The Blue Hose had to climb out of a similar hole down the regulation stretch, trailing by nine with 5:16 left. Teel sent the game into overtime with a driving layup with four seconds on the clock.
Teel finished the season with 26 double-figure scoring games and five 20-plus scoring games. His layup that sent the game into overtime marked his 1,000th career point.

Longwood scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, right after Presbyterian put up one in the top half, and the Lancers managed to salvage the third game of the season’s first Big South series, 4-3, in Farmville, Va.
Kevin Warlinek (1-0) struck out the side in the PC ninth.
Neither team ever led by more than a run. Both scored one in the first, PC pulled ahead in the third, Longwood (11-13, 1-2 BSC) tied it in the sixth, PC retook the lead and lost it in the eighth.

Center fielder Joel Dragoo belted a homer and went 2/4 with two RBI. Right fielder Rhogue Wallace was also 2/4, with a double.
The Longwood left fielder, Willie Havens, went 2/4 and drove in two runs.
Christ Charalambous (0-1) took the loss for the Hose (11-13, 2-1). Starter Fenix DiGiacomo turned in seven stout innings, giving up six hits, two runs and a walk with 10 strikeouts.
