County Signs: Turns out it isn’t the weekend yet

On Friday morning, I awakened, and for about 30 minutes, thought it was Saturday.

Until I made coffee, I thought I still had Sweet ‘n’ Low.

The tipoff was that TCM wasn’t running a silly comedy or a crime serial. (Inexplicably, I have grown fond of old Falcon movies with George Sanders or Tom Conway, who were brothers.)

Offered instead was newsreel footage of old Olympics. They were in Paris, only in black and white. I didn’t watch because I recently watched Chariots of Fire, which, obviously, was on TCM.

Wait. This isn’t right. Could it still be Friday?

It could.

This, too, will pass. By the end of next week, high-schools and colleges are to start holding practices for the coming year. Scrimmages will be held the following week. I’m already looking ahead, matching schedules.

I make elaborate plans that are too ambitious.

Let’s see. What if I drive down to Macon on Thursday to watch PC play Mercer, then take my time and arrive on Saturday to watch Furman play Ole Miss? I’ve never been to Macon or Oxford.

Ain’t happenin’. On that Friday night, back in Clinton, unsurprisingly, there is a high-school game. Raiders and Red Devils are playing in it. I wouldn’t skip it for the Super Bowl.

How can a man be expected to keep up with what day it is with burning issues to occupy his time?

In small part because of another quality relief performance from Clinton’s Carson Glenn, Chapin-Newberry Post 193/24 advanced in the Senior American Legion baseball playoffs, 10-4, at Richland Post 215.

The decisive game had been rained out on Wednesday.

Richland (12-7) led 3-2 after an inning, but Chapin-Newberry (14-9) remedied matters with three runs in the second inning and four in the fourth.

Glenn relieved starter Tripp Bollibon and pitched 2-1/3 innings, allowing only a walk. He fanned one.

Matthew Rollison went 4/4 at the plate, including a home run, six runs driven in and two scored. Jack Coletti was 3/5 with a double.

Jalen Scott collected two of Richland’s five hits.

Chapin-Newberry advances to visit Charleston Post 147 on Friday at 6 p.m.

High-school football practice begins on Friday, Aug. 2. Clinton High hits the practice field at 1:45.

The Red Devils are to follow on Saturday, Aug. 3, at 7:30 a.m.

Five PC players are on the Academic Honor Roll of the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association.m

Brooke Chandler, Madeline Hart, Mickey Paredes, Mackenzie Partsch, and Kylie Sullivan all met the requirements, part of 65 athletes from the Big South Conference who made the cut.

Head coach Eric Clakeley’s group is one of 100 Division I schools tabbed as an Academic Honor Squad, meaning that PC surpassed the requirement of a 3.2 team GPA to earn that distinction.

Two PC men’s golfers, Jimmy McCollum and Lleyton Renner, are Cobalt Golf All-America Scholars, courtesy the Golf Coaches Association of America.

McCollum earned the distinction for the third time, while it was Renner’s second selection.

A Greer product, McCollum graduated with a 3.83 GPA, with a major in biochemistry and a minor in mathematics.

Simpsonville’s Rennerturned in a 3.23 in business administration major.

Five newcomers have joined the Presbyterian College women’s soccer roster.

All are freshmen: Sydney Lassiter of Cornelius, N.C.; Ashley McAtee of Algonquin, Ill.; Gracie Moulton of Lexington; Julija Poplasen of Slovenia; and Fialesa Soderberg of Stockholm, Sweden.

As football season approaches – and, let’s be real, the free memory is dwindling – I expect to streamline the site name. Since the coverage – Furman and Laurens County – is difficult to convey in a word, I may stick with Wellpilgrim (com, net, et al.). Or, if anyone thinks of anything snazzy, I’ll take it under advisement.

A shorter name makes it more likely that readers go directly to the site without linking through social media (not that there’s anything wrong with that).

Advertising alone will not keep me going, but there’s room for a few more. Every ad is inset in every story.

Support the advertisers. They are all fine people who appreciate my attempts to restore coverage of local sports. They are dependable, and not too long ago, I sold a couple ads to folks who weren’t. I am thus cautious.

I rely on readers who like the coverage I provide to make contributions. Several ways work.

Please donate whatever you consider appropriate via Venmo at DHK Sports. You may also reach me by mail at 11185 Highway 56 North, Clinton  29325.

In the off chance you’d like to read my novels and other books, they’re available on Amazon and many prominent bookseller sites. You can read them on your phones and other devices for a modest cost. I make a bit more if you purchase the actual books, but what I mainly want is for folks to read them.
