Apart from the homecoming massacre of ’24, the recent athletics events at Furman haven’t been half bad.

Texas A&M edged the Paladins by two strokes in the 54th Furman Intercollegiate, setting a tournament record of 831, a shot better than Furman while winning last year.

Wake Forest (-19) finished third in the 15-team field.

Scotty Kennon (-11) of Wake Forest won the individual championship with a 54-hole score of 68-68-66=202, taking the win by three strokes and also establishing a new tournament record. He broke the former record of 203, which was set by Furman’s Jack Kay in 1986.

The Paladins placed three players among the top eight: juniors Harris Barth (-6) and Clark Akers (-6), who tied for fifth, and senior Trey Diehl (-5), who placed eighth.

Akers was one of three Paladins to card a 1-under 70 in the final round.  He recorded two birdies on the front and two on the back, while Diehl scored a 70 with a birdie on No. 2 and three birdies on the back. Senior Will Morlan (+4) scored three straight birdies from No. 10 through 12 and added a final birdie on 18 to finish with a 70 and tie for 37th.

The Paladins (8-5-3, 4-1-2 SoCon) opened the scoring just 2:38 into the match when Shania Diaz lofted a cross from the left wing to a charging Tara Katz, who headed into the right side of the net from the top of the six-yard box, to give Furman a 1-0 lead. In the 23rd minute, Ellie Herrmann sent a long free kick towards the far-left side of the box that Katie Bengough headed across the face of goal for fifth-year senior Nieva Gaither to tap in to double the advantage.

Sophomore Norah Roller capped the first-half outburst at the 36-minute mark by running onto a failed clearance by the Terriers and burying her first touch into the right side of the net to put the Paladins in front 3-0 at intermission.

Senior Ashlyn Goila upped the margin to 4-0 in the 71st minute by rushing down the right side, rounding her defender, and sending a shot across goal and off the left post for her third goal of the season.

“It was great to bounce back with a victory and have four different goal scorers today,” said Paladin head coach Andrew Burr. “We were able to play a lot of players today and get the result we needed to stay in the SoCon race.”

Furman men’s soccer matched a season-high with four goals on Saturday night en route to a 4-1 victory over VMI at Stone Stadium.

Furman improved to 6-3-2 on the season and evened its conference record at 1-1. VMI slipped to 5-7-2 overall and 0-3 in SoCon play.

The Paladins, who celebrated seniors Ivan Agyaakwah, Christian Kraus and Spencer Mallion prior to kickoff, opened the scoring in the fourth minute on Slade Starnes’ first goal of the season. Following a long throw-in, Agyaakwah headed a shot off the cross bar that caromed to Starnes in the middle of the box and the sophomore snuck his shot through traffic at the 3:49 mark to give Furman a 1-0 lead.

Less than two minutes later, Furman restored its lead for good when Wilfer Bustamante won the race to a loose ball following a save by VMI’s Zack Murphy and played a pass to Lloyd Wamu Snell in the middle of the box that the forward fired into an empty net at the 32:53 mark for his fourth goal of the year.

In the 78th minute, Diego Hernandez found Christian Kraus for a finish in the box for his fourth score of the season at 77:21 to up the Furman cushion to 4-1.

“It’s great to get three points tonight and great to be back on Seagraves Field after five straight away games,” said Paladin head coach Doug Allison, who saw his team play at home for the first time since Sept. 8. “I’m happy to see four different players score goals for us tonight and glad to have so many alumni back supporting the program on homecoming weekend.”

Furman compiled a 34-9 margin in total shots and equaled its highest single-game shots total since 2021. The Paladins finished with an 18-3 advantage in shots on goal.

Salinas made two saves to earn his sixth victory in goal, while Murphy stopped 14 shots in a losing effort for VMI.
