As the baseball playoffs near, Clinton High (14-6, 6-2 Region 3-2A) continued to roll and displayed a particular killer instinct in Monday night’s 14-3 victory at Saluda.
The Red Devils have won seven of their last nine games. The score in Saluda was a bit misleading as Clinton entered the seventh inning clinging to a 5-3 edge.
That’s right. The Red Devils scored nine runs in their final at-bat.

Left fielder Brett Young came in handy throughout. The senior went 4/5 with three doubles, three runs and an RBI. He doubled in the first, fifth and sixth innings and singled in the seventh.
The score was tied after three innings, and the Tigers led, 3-2, after four.
Pitchers Jaydon Glenn, Isaac Cane and Zack Lawson combined to give up four hits and strike out 13.
Luke Young, Owen Glenn and Talan Campbell also added two-baggers.
Edouardo Dominguez had two of Saluda’s four hits.

Newberry College is 25 -25 in baseball with a road game to play, which is a bit of a disappointment, but Clinton’s Wilson Wages has had a fine season patrolling the gardens for the Wolves.
The redshirt freshman is batting.313, starting 47 games, mostly in left field, stealing 21/23 bases, scoring 31 runs and driving in 32. He has five doubles, six triples and two home runs.
Another Clintonian, junior Luke White, is batting .250 with seven RBI.
Wages is a psychology major. White specializes in physical education.

Clinton softball won its seventh straight game, edging Whitmire, 10-8, on the road Monday.
The Red Devils, a fast-closing 10-8 by record, as well, held on after taking a 7-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth inning.
Right fielder Halleigh Luke went 4/5 for Clinton with two doubles and a triple. Addie Watkins- homered and Me-Me Smith had three hits at bat and a complete game in the circle, yielding only two earned runs.
Laurens (8-11, 5-5) completed a Region 1-4A softball sweep of Emerald with an 18-3 victory in Greenwood.
Zealy Martin drove in four runs, thanks to three hits, one of which was a double.
Carly Edwards doubled and tripled.
The Raiders stole seven bases, three by Summer Nations. Laurens amassed 14 hits in only three at-bats.
Presbyterian College head volleyball coach Steve Benson has accepted the head coaching position at Mercer University.

As every release at every school where a new coach is sought, a nationwide search is allegedly underway.
“We are so grateful for everything Coach Benson has poured into our program and our student-athletes,” said Presbyterian College Director of Athletics Dee Nichols. “His impact will be felt long after he moves on. Coach Benson will always have a special place in our Blue Hose family and we wish him well on the next chapter of his career.”
Benson spent two seasons at the helm of PC’s volleyball program.

The Blue Hose reached the Big South tournament semifinals last fall.
Presbyterian Blue Hose acrobatics & tumbling senior Abby Katz was named National Collegiate Acrobatics & Tumbling Association All-American. Katz is the first student-athlete in the program’s history to earn All-American honors.

Katz, a top and tumbler (whatever a top is), played a major role on Presbyterian’s Pyramid team, which recorded three consecutive perfect 10s. The Columbia native competed in at least 12 heats and the team event in every meet while helping the Blue Hose collect a program-record seven wins.
Winthrop won two of three games in a Big South softball series in Rock Hill, with the Blue Hose salvaging the final game of a Saturday doubleheader, 4-3.

Winthrop took a 4-3 walk-off in game one. Peyton Duncan won her 12th game of the season for PC. Morgan Farthing and Kendall Owens singled in the tying and winning runs.
Presbyterian (21-26, 4-11) has one more series when league-leading Radford visits this weekend. PC hosts the Big South tournament May 7-10, but the Blue Hose won’t be in it.

Junior Avery West of the Presbyterian College lacrosse team is the Big South Defensive Player of the Week to close the 2025 campaign.
West had career-high in both ground balls (eight) and caused turnovers (seven), leading the team in both categories over the course of the spring.
Presbyterian finished up with a 5-12 mark.
Brayden Davis threw a four-inning no-hitter at Laurens Academy (5-7) in a 15-0 verdict in Lee Academy’s victory on Monday in Bishopville.

Evan Asalone, one of three Crusader baserunners, stole a base.
I was eating lunch on Monday at a local cafe, and the generic news channel informed me that it offered “refreshing storytelling,” which I can’t remember getting from a local news source. Perhaps my standard of what constitutes “refreshing” is unusually high.
Taking a break from reading a book – this happens when I get a bit drowsy – I watched a movie for a while, and it occurred to me that Hollywood is running out of plot lines. It’s just a matter of combining old titles. Mission Impossible: Red Sky at Morning. Die Hard: Lassie Come Home. Star Wars: High Noon.
Most of the books on the New York Times best-seller list are either for children or about politics. What chance have my novels got? They are nonetheless available on Amazon, and I wish you’d read one or two or five.
