A bowl a day keeps basketball away

First of all, there are not too many bowl games. Let’s clear that up right away. The appropriate number is not what I want to see. It’s how many it takes to fill all ESPN programming. If ESPN wants San Juaquin Polytechnic to play the Southeast Vermont Syrup Makers in Rangoon, they will play, and it will probably be a better game than Clemson-Penn State.

When I tune in a bowl game – and watching them on TV is cheaper than going to Dollar Tree – my first goal is to identify where it’s being played. My second is to identify what the sponsor is … and what the sponsor is.

What’s ReliaQuest? Why, it’s cybersecurity, of course. And it’s in Tampa. The Cure Bowl? The 68  Ventures Bowl? The Gasparilla Bowl? Why, Gasparilla is a brand of sarsaparilla, of course. The Game Above Bowl? It’s played in almost heaven, Honolulu, not to be confused with the Game Below Bowl, which is likely to be played as soon as a stadium is constructed in Death Valley (the one in California).

The Rate Bowl? Minnesota beat New Mexico, 20-17. I rated it above the Myrtle Beach Bowl, where Western Michigan clobbered Kennesaw State, 41-6.

I try to support the sponsors. I bought some Pop Tarts Saturday.

I’ve boosted my cache of useless information.

Hawaii is Hawai’I in Hawaiian. Or Hawai’in.

In all seriousness, King Gasparilla was a pirate. Seriousness is a relative term.

I wish there was a Daniel Boone Bowl. What a boom, what a doer, what a dream come-a-truer was he. I’m old.

I have great anxiety regarding the Carolina Panthers, who are better in Charlotte than elsewhere but generally win and lose on alternating weeks.

Stephen A. Smith is the modern Howard Cosell, which is yet another measure of civilization’s decline.

When a 6-6 team plays another 6-6 team, now that’s entertainment.

Great teams don’t need seven sets of uniforms. Watching Penn State, Alabama, Auburn, Southern California or Texas is reliable. Not always successful, but reliable.

Truett McConnell arrived from Cleveland, Ga., to Templeton Center with little effect on Sunday.

Four Blue Hose scored in double figures, and two more had double-digit rebounding totals. Presbyterian (7-8) got 18 points from Jonah Pierce and Triston Wilson, 16 from Carl Parrish and 14 from Josh Pickett in a 91-64 victory over the 6-8 Bears. Pierce pulled down 11 rebounds, one more than Jaylen Peterson, who scored nine.

PC had lost three of its previous four men’s basketball games and begins Big South play next Saturday with a 2 p.m. home game against USC Upstate.

The Blue Hose put the Bears swiftly away by outscoring them, 51-25, in the opening half. PC controlled the boards, 44-29, shot .507 from the floor and .333 from long range.

Shawn Walker led Truett McConnell with 17 points, and Jadon Yeh scored 12.

Wilson was credited with six of PC’s 22 assists.

Take a look at the stats here.

Destiny Ladson had a short-term effect on the destiny of the Clinton girls’ basketball team, leading West Ashley to a 58-37 victory over the previously undefeated Red Devils on Saturday. Shaniah Townsend added 12 points and seven rebounds.

The Wildcats (7-3) led only 20-18 at halftime.

Clinton (12-1) takes on Lucy Beckham (4-3) on Monday at 12:30 p.m., continuing play in Charleston’s Carolina Invitational.

Via social media, Clinton’s Bryson James announced his intention to transfer from Anderson University to North Carolina Central University in Durham, N.C.

For the 5-6 Trojans, James rushed for 612 yards and six touchdowns in eight games.
