By MONTE DUTTON Luke Shiflett says hello to the end zone. (Furman photos) https://dunesproperties.com/agent/mark-mitchell/ Life is full of surprises. Wonders, even. A few weeks ago, I noted that I hadn’t seen a close game all year, and I watched two of the best I’ve ever seen in the next two nights. As Harry Caray, used …

Furman takes care of The Citadel business, 28-14
By MONTE DUTTON Tyler Huff looks for a receiver. (Monte Dutton photo) https://dunesproperties.com/agent/mark-mitchell/ It wasn’t pretty. Okay, the day was. It didn’t look much like a rivalry. Furman just took care of business – no more, no less – in a 28-14 victory over The Citadel at Paladin Stadium in front of 12,157 fans on …

The Raiders' defense came to life. (John Clayton photo) https://www.scfbins.com/agents/buddybridges GREER – For a night, all was right with the Laurens Raiders’ world. A Friday night. In the fall. Blue Hose to seek PFL breakthrough at home
Dominic Kibby (1) and teamates celebrate a score. (Monte Dutton photo) https://www.sadlerhughes.com/ Bailey Memorial Stadium hasn’t hosted a game this big since the COVID spring of 2021. Not that it’s the Super Bowl, or even anything approaching the Bronze Derby, but Stetson visits on Saturday at 1 p.m. for a game Presbyterian needs to win. …
Ayers grabs the kids’ attention
By MONTE DUTTON Mike Ayers successfully coached the Wofford Terriers for 30 years. (Monte Dutton photos) https://www.facebook.com/UpstateInsuranceConsultants Mike Ayers is a cure for what ails you. The ex-Wofford head coach, whose career was extraordinary by any measure, eschews microphones at his speaking appearances. Listening to Ayers address the Laurens County Touchdown Club on Thursday reminded …
It’s still … The Citadel
By MONTE DUTTON Jack Rhodes (15) stepped up at free safety. (Furman photos) https://dunesproperties.com/agent/mark-mitchell/ A look at The Citadel’s stat sheet requires little analysis. There’s not a lot there. Furman’s ancestral Southern Conference rival is 0-5. The average score is 44-7. The Bulldogs’ FBS trip was to Georgia Southern. They have since fallen to Campbell, …
Let’s just call it a wide range of outcomes
(Monte Dutton photos) https://www.facebook.com/UpstateInsuranceConsultants Let’s see. Over the weekend, Clinton won big, Laurens lost big, Thornwell lost big, and Laurens Academy and Presbyterian College lost, uh, moderately. The Red Devils’ 51-28 victory over Union County was not enough to restore them to the Class 3A top 10 in the S.C. Media rankings. Clinton (5-2, 1-0 …

But I kid The Citadel …
By MONTE DUTTON (Furman photo) https://dunesproperties.com/agent/mark-mitchell/ It was good to be back at Furman on Monday. It’ll be great to be there on Saturday when The Citadel comes to town. I suppose the annual battles between South Carolina’s Athens and Sparta don’t seem as frantic as they once did. The addition to the Southern Conference …
A matter of excessive timing
By MONTE DUTTON Good times were back at Wilder Stadium. (Monte Dutton photos) https://www.facebook.com/UpstateInsuranceConsultants On Friday night, I showed up at Wilder Stadium before any of the Clinton High School players. Keith Richardson and my paternal grandmother unwittingly made me ridiculously punctual. In an age in which most of my acquaintances are fashionably late, I …
