By MONTE DUTTON (Monte Dutton photo) Next week high-school coverage will amp up, but for now, here’s a collection of thoughts from here, there and yon. https://www.facebook.com/UpstateInsuranceConsultants The dominant story on radio/TV gabfests is “who will get Shohei Ohtani?” Either the Los Angeles Angels keep him in Anaheim at the risk of watching him become …

Richard the Lionhearted
By MONTE DUTTON Stanford Jennings and Tim Sorrells (Monte Dutton photos) It’s been a week. When I learned Dick Sheridan had died, I dropped everything and tried to write something that others would not. For most of a decade, I worked with and for Sheridan. https://dunesproperties.com/agent/mark-mitchell/ His greatness stands on its own merits. It doesn’t …
Dark humor
By MONTE DUTTON (Pixabay) https://www.sadlerhughes.com/ The heat is here to stay. It’s July in earnest, and earnest, of course, leads to August. Soon the countdown to football begins. Once the players get accustomed to overheating, the fans will heat up, and the weather makes no difference in that. The level of sportsmanship on the field …
Sometimes it’s hard to spell it all out
By MONTE DUTTON (Pixabay) https://www.sadlerhughes.com/ Because I think a lot on weekends … I suspect many more foreign athletes are limited to a single or nick name – Ichiro, “The Joker,” Ohtani, Pele, et al. --- because of a reluctance to pronounce the names. It’s as true of me as broadcasters, but I do have …
Hard to please and worth it
By MONTE DUTTON (Furman graphic) It’s difficult to describe a man simply from a panorama of nearly half a century. Richard Brinsley Sheridan had a righteous voice. https://dunesproperties.com/agent/mark-mitchell/ Football players did what he told them. He told them to win. He molded them to be indomitable. They expected to win. https://www.facebook.com/UpstateInsuranceConsultants Dick Sheridan died in …
Hither and yon
By MONTE DUTTON (Pixabay) https://www.sadlerhughes.com/ It would be impossible for me not to grow distant from NASCAR. Many top drivers I’ve never met. I still scratch my head at not reading something from somewhere about what to me seems obvious. I never heard of Shane van Gisbergen before. For once, I was not alone. How …
Racing in the streets … in the dark
By MONTE DUTTON (Pixabay) https://chsreddevils.com/chs-booster-club-application-2023-2024/ This is “dead week” for high-school sports, a term I’m surprised hasn’t been changed in this humorless age. It is not dead week for dogs because fireworks are going to be going off even if it’s hailing. Tuesday is Independence Day, which occurs with unerring reliability on the Fourth of …
What I’ve decided lately
By MONTE DUTTON (Pixabay) https://www.sadlerhughes.com/ Just to be on the record, I do not expect the NASCAR race on Sunday through the streets of Chicago to be entertaining. I expect it’s going to be a rarity, a stock-car race where passing is harder than an IndyCar race. Stock car racing is entertaining on a road …
Diamonds are forever but not for a while
By MONTE DUTTON Bryce Young fires to first. (Monte Dutton photos) https://www.sadlerhughes.com/ This might be weird. I feel as if baseball is over. I haven’t watched so little major-league baseball on TV in more than 25 years. I kept hearing about how great the College World Series was, so I finally watched a couple games, …
Up the down staircase
By MONTE DUTTON Steve Englehart figures to improve in year two (PC photo) Presbyterian College has a new president, returning to Clinton after a relatively short-term tenure at Mercer University and a long-term one on the PC history faculty. This may or may not have an appreciable effect on the Blue Hose athletics program for …
