"Why do they [write] for their money? Why do they [work] for short pay? They ain't getting nowhere and they're losing their share. They must have gone crazy back there." — Michael Burton (paraphrased)
By MONTE DUTTON (Furman photo) Click here. It’s all busy work, mostly thankless. Thanks to staking out Laurens County as part of my territory, I’m aware of the importance of baseball. It’s big. Clinton won the state title in Class 3A last year. An inexperienced team is getting better by the week and still has …

By MONTE DUTTON Coleman Coker (Monte Dutton photos) Click here. Fun. You can’t beat fun. Another of my late sportswriting chums – I’ve been mourning Jim McLaurin lately – used to say that with a regularity that somehow didn’t undermine the humor. It was all in the timing. David Poole and I were alike in …
By MONTE DUTTON Ryan Ouzts (Monte Dutton photo) Click here. Every time another unexpected event happens, whether it lives in fame or infamy, compels me to start reciting again. One year the football team won a game one week by 65 points and lost the next week by 72. Last year a descendant of that …

By MONTE DUTTON Luke Young (Monte Dutton photo) Click here. I was back in my right mind Tuesday, taxes begone, getting ahead, watching part of a movie that I’ve watched part of three times in the last month, playing a little guitar, having something I hadn’t had at Steamers and trundling off to a ballyard. …

By MONTE DUTTON Luke Young (Monte Dutton photos) Click here. Baseball is a funny game. Joe Garagiola named a book that. The first person who said it was probably in the first game. Garagiola gets credit because he wrote the book. Kids go to baseball games to play. They’ll take up any vacant space and …

(PC photo) Click here. On Friday night, I watched football, and in a way, it felt like spring practice for me, too. I started out at Clinton High School watching baseball, and when I got home from the Presbyterian College spring football game, I had two sets of photos to process, select and lay out. …

By MONTE DUTTON (Monte Dutton photos) Click here. One characteristic of the Presbyterian College spring football game was that it got better as it went along. Would that it be true of us all. I was there for most of it. I started out frantically shooting photos of the Clinton Red Devils baseball game. It …
