By MONTE DUTTON Eels hover above Paris Mountain. (Monte Dutton photos) Click here. I thought well, gee whiz, why not just start the season? Saturday was the first one in the autumn when it’s not too hot. Except it was March 16. Fluffy clouds slowly crossed the sky, northeast, as if they constituted an armed …

County Signs: Raiders sweep Eagles, Hose drop opener
Owen Pridgen is on a tear. (Monte Dutton photos) Click here. Baseball outlasted the weather – at least at Laurens District High School and Presbyterian College -- on Friday as the skies cleared and home-plate umpires yelled, “Play ball!” The Raiders, more notably, did. A band of Revolutionaries, once known as the Colonials, descended upon …

Furmanology: Rare outbreaks of football are okay in spring
Colton Hinton (Furman photo) Click here. I’m excited to see what the Paladins are cooking up. Many news slots have come open from last fall’s 10-3 season and a last-second loss in the FCS third round. To wit: Kickoff for the Purple-White spring game is set for 1 p.m. Saturday at Paladin Stadium The game, …

Thoughts this time of year
Laurens Academy's Olivia Huck (Monte Dutton photos) Click here. When I get up in the morning, brew some coffee while I’m taking some meds, turn on the TV and see what awful happened last night, my set (remember when a TV was a set?) recommends what I want to see. Then I commence translating sports …
County Signs: Edwards to Raiders’ rescue
Carly Edwards (Monte Dutton photo) Click here. The soft rivalry between Clinton and Laurens -- I always do it alphabetically except when it refers to the site, at which time it is Clinton-Laurens in Laurens and Laurens-Clinton in Clinton, and never the twain shall meet – in softball was a rootin,’ tootin’ dandy on Thursday …

The Bulldogs won the opener, 8-5, in 11 innings, and the Paladins bounced back to capture the nightcap, …

County Signs: All is looking … mostly way up
Jordan Hudson (Monte Dutton photos) Click here. I just heard a broadcaster say at the end of a tournament game, “They’d like to keep this run going!” Who doesn’t? The theme of Wednesday night’s games was Run, run, run, run, runaway! In Taylors, a red-hot gang of Laurens Raiders left Eastside green with envy, grounding …

County Signs: Red Devils turn it around
Carson Glenn (Monte Dutton photos) Click here. My truck has a message on its video screen that occasionally reminds me not to be distracted, and I have to be distracted in order to affirm that I do not intend to be distracted. I love my truck, now, but goshamighty. Clinton evened its record and won …
County Signs: Words, names, Devils, Raiders, Crusaders & Hose …
Alyssa Young (Monte Dutton photos) Click here. Words I don’t like. Bear with me. I’ll get to the good stuff shortly. In most cases, “utilize” is a snobbish replacement for “use.” In NASCAR, “forward bite” is redundant because none of the cars is burdened by “backward bite.” It’s just “bite.” “There’s a timeout on the …
