By MONTE DUTTON Wyatt Hughes at Kennesaw (Furman photo) https://dunesproperties.com/agent/mark-mitchell/ Clay Hendrix isn’t a hard man to figure. He’s a football coach by trade. He matches Steve Earle’s description of a road in Oklahoma: “straighter than a preacher, longer than a memory.” It’s not a “Nowhere Road,” though. It’s a road to success, paved by …

Tide of close games rolls in
By MONTE DUTTON Too many times, yellow flags told the story. (Monte Dutton photo) https://www.scfbins.com/agents/buddybridges Watch what you ask for. You might just get it. You may recall that last week I wrote a column when I realized had not witnessed in person a single close game all year. Jesus must have thought that a …

Kennesaw, named for a nearby mountain and battle, is nestled on the outskirts of Atlanta, and its university is noted for an upwardly mobile football team. The Paladins escaped Fifth Third Bank Field with a …
Hose don’t need no stinkin’ scholarships
By MONTE DUTTON Tyler Wesley passed for 281 yards and rushed for 28. (Monte Dutton photos) https://www.sadlerhughes.com/ SPARTANBURG – Cally Gault used to talk about it at the drop of a derby hat: that fighting Blue Hose spirit. It reared its lovely head at Gibbs Stadium on Saturday evening as Presbyterian stunned Wofford, 23-20. It …

Unfortunately for the Laurens Raiders, it was the Union County Yellow Jackets that prevailed, 20-17, Friday night. Laurens (0-5) took a 17-7 lead to halftime, but the Yellow Jackets scored touchdowns in each of the final two quarters while shutting out the Raiders. Quarterback …
Miracle denied, 22-21
By MONTE DUTTON Tushawan Richardson buys some time, and he needed every second. (Monte Dutton photos) https://www.scfbins.com/agents/buddybridges If Clinton had won on Friday night, it would’ve been forever known as The Drive. A banner with it in all caps – THE DRIVE – would have been festooned across North Broad Street. But the Red Devils …

Take their medicine, get back to work
By MONTE DUTTON Joshua Harris (Furman photo) https://dunesproperties.com/agent/mark-mitchell/ The mood at Clay Hendrix’s weekly media conference was best expressed in an 1888 poem by William Ernest Henley, who was British and thus unlikely to have competed in American football. My head is bloody, but unbowed. The poem’s name is “Invictus.” I had to memorize and …
A brave front afterward
By MONTE DUTTON Hugh Ryan skirmishes with South Carolina's Xavier Legette. (Furman photos) https://dunesproperties.com/agent/mark-mitchell/ My lingering memory of South Carolina’s 47-21 victory over Furman wasn’t on the Williams-Brice Stadium surface. It was in the postgame media conference. Hugh Ryan, the Paladins’ much-decorated safety, sat there in anguished agony. He’d had a rough night. A lot …
