"Why do they [write] for their money? Why do they [work] for short pay? They ain't getting nowhere and they're losing their share. They must have gone crazy back there." — Michael Burton (paraphrased)
(Furman depiction) https://dunesproperties.com/agent/mark-mitchell/ Timmons Arena is leaving as a caterpillar and returning as a butterfly. While Furman’s basketball home of nearly three decades is metamorphosing in 2024-25, the Paladins’ men’s team is playing mostly at Bon Secours Wellness Arena in downtown Greenville. The women are to play at nearby North Greenville University. Then, by the …

By MONTE DUTTON Carter Whitt whips a pass. (Monte Dutton photos) https://dunesproperties.com/agent/mark-mitchell/ I sure missed being at Timmons Arena on Sunday. Undoubtedly some friends figured I stayed home so I could watch the Daytona 500 since I spent 20 of the seasons in my life at the Daytona 500, but that’s not true. If I’d …
J.P. Pegues and his teammates were at their best. (Furman photo) https://dunesproperties.com/agent/mark-mitchell/ Furman may have exposed its destiny on Sunday afternoon. The Paladins may have previewed a glorious future. Or, maybe not. Oh, Doctor, as Dan Scott likes to say and Red Barber used to. J.P. Pegues was brilliant, and no one was bad, and …
By MONTE DUTTON Ben Vander Wal (Monte Dutton photos) https://dunesproperties.com/agent/mark-mitchell/ Furman, tied for fourth in the Southern Conference men’s basketball standings, has five more games before the tournament begins in Asheville, N.C., on March 8. None is likely to be easy. Against their remaining opponents – Chattanooga at home on Sunday, at Samford on Feb. …

(Furman photo) https://dunesproperties.com/agent/mark-mitchell/ Furman beat Wofford in something. That is an inaccurate and overwrought observation, particularly from the possessor of a Furman degree, but the Paladins’ 64-51 women’s basketball upset of the Terriers at Timmons Arena sure came in handy, given recent Wofford victories in football and women’s basketball. In point of fact, Furman leads …
By MONTE DUTTON Ben Vander Wal had his first double-double. (Monte Dutton photos) https://dunesproperties.com/agent/mark-mitchell/ When I was a kid, I thought Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium had the best marketing link in history going. The tarpaulin rolled out over the field by the grounds crew was sponsored by Morton Salt. When it rains, it pours. That was …
By MONTE DUTTON Furman must keep its focus versus VMI. (Monte Dutton photos) https://dunesproperties.com/agent/mark-mitchell/ The 2022-23 Furman basketball season was more predictable than this one. It was a season of historic greatness, seldom rivaled in the school’s annals. Not that a 28-8 record, Southern Conference championship and NCAA Tournament victory were without perilous moments. This …

(Furman photo) https://dunesproperties.com/agent/mark-mitchell/ A three-point play in the final minute led Furman to a 58-53 victory over Western Carolina and an end to a three-game losing skein. The game, originally scheduled for Saturday afternoon, was played instead on Sunday at Timmons Arena. Session's fast break layup, assisted by Tate Walters off a steal by Sydney …
J.P. Pegues (Furman photo) https://dunesproperties.com/agent/mark-mitchell/ JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The air in Freedom Hall was fraught with desperation as Furman fought to end a slump and East Tennessee State sought to keep a Southern Conference men’s basketball streak going. Junior J.P. Pegues scored seven of Furman’s final nine points, including four free throws in the …

Bryce Stanfield (Furman photo) https://dunesproperties.com/agent/mark-mitchell/ I was at a local hangout, and a friend asked, “How’s that Furman football player doing?” I told him Bryce Stanfield was apparently in bad shape, that I was praying for him and that he was a great guy. My friend, who is a Georgia fan, said, “I figured he …
