"Why do they [write] for their money? Why do they [work] for short pay? They ain't getting nowhere and they're losing their share. They must have gone crazy back there." — Michael Burton (paraphrased)
By MONTE DUTTON (Monte Dutton photos) https://dunesproperties.com/agent/mark-mitchell/ I would have liked to be in Frisco. I’ve got a lot of friends in the area, and at least one who would have let me sleep on his couch. All I would have needed was some gas and spending money. I could’ve not paid my taxes for …

J.P. Pegues (Monte Dutton photos) https://dunesproperties.com/agent/mark-mitchell/ CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Furman got run out of the Roundhouse on Saturday night, and the Roundhouse is a fairly large place. J.D. Pegues and Alex Williams returned, both looked rusty, and Chattanooga led from start to finish to win, 73-58, at the facility now known as McKinley Arena, with …

By MONTE DUTTON (Furman photo) https://dunesproperties.com/agent/mark-mitchell/ On Thursday night, I watched the replay of the Furman-UNCG game. Carter Whitt (Furman photo) https://dunesproperties.com/agent/mark-mitchell/ GREENSBORO, N.C. – Not to be outdone after falling to Anderson with its two leading scorers sidelined, Furman played its Southern Conference debut with the top three unavailable for duty on Wednesday night. Not surprisingly, UNC Greensboro, the team picked to finish second to the Paladins in preseason coaches’ rankings, …
By MONTE DUTTON Ben VanderWal (Furman photo) https://dunesproperties.com/agent/mark-mitchell/ It’s been a while now since Furman was picked by media and coaches to defend successfully the Southern Conference men’s basketball championship it won last season. The Paladins likely wouldn’t win those polls now. It’s been a rough-and-tumble ride for the Paladins, who lost to Division II …
Sydney Ryan (Furman photos) https://dunesproperties.com/agent/mark-mitchell/ Led by the Sydneys – Ryan scored 16 and James 14 -- Furman dominated the second half and dispatched North Carolina Central, 73-63, at Timmons Arena in a Sunday women’s basketball matinee. It took a third-quarter surge – Furman outscored the Eagles, 24-11 -- for the Paladins to close out …

Garrett Hien works against Anderson's Mack Burgett. (Furman photo) https://dunesproperties.com/agent/mark-mitchell/ Who knew Furman’s 10-game winning streak at Timmons Arena would be broken by Anderson? The Division II Trojans, coached by ex-Paladins assistant Jimmie Williams, upended Furman, 79-74, on Saturday. The Furman offense looked rudderless in point guard J.P. Pegues’ absence. From Anderson’s perspective, it was …
By MONTE DUTTON Bob Richey watches the Paladins closely. (Monte Dutton photo) https://dunesproperties.com/agent/mark-mitchell/ Remain calm. All is well. Relax. There’s nothing wrong with raised expectations. They are unavoidable after last season, when Furman went 28-8, won the Southern Conference and pulled off a first-round upset in the Big Dance. Jalen Slawson is either in Sacramento, …
By MONTE DUTTON Clinton celebrates a state championship. (Monte Dutton photo) https://www.scfbins.com/agents/buddybridges Everybody does the same thing this time of year, and I’m not referring to regifting a pair of socks. Everybody rates. The season’s best games. The year’s best stories. The best batches of chili. The worst slices of fruitcake. I’m not going to …
