By MONTE DUTTON Javen Cook runs away (Monte Dutton photos) Click here. Blacksburg came to Wilder Stadium for the first time ever and to Clinton for the first time since 1938. It didn’t go well for the Wildcats on Friday night. Clinton (6-2, 3-0 Region 1-2A) torched Blacksburg (3-5, 0-2), 61-14, and rolled up 605 …

Furmanology: Huff keeps on playing
Tyler Huff as a Paladin (Furman photo) Click here. Amidst an otherwise dreary Furman fall, it’s comforting to see Tyler Huff swashbuckling his way through Jacksonville State games on weeknights. Huff is doing for the Gamecocks what he did for the Paladins in a pair of 10-3 seasons at quarterback. The 6-1, 215 “mega senior” …
County Signs: Whatever floats your boat …
By MONTE DUTTON Moonlight through the pines (Monte Dutton photos) Click here. It’s seldom a good sign when someone answers a question by saying, “I just do.” Everyone has a right to say it. For instance, if you ask me why I dislike raw onions, I might say, “I just do.” Most issues, though, have …

By MONTE DUTTON Click here. Two baseball memories for a Wednesday. I’ve got a lot of Furman baseball memories. Apparently, I’m not getting any more. Dum spiro spero. I was in San Diego, Calif., in the middle of Fernandomania. I saw Valenzuela pitch against the Padres at Jack Murphy Stadium. It was the wildest scene …

The Catamounts, led by quarterback Cole Gonzales, rolled up a Southern Conference record 801 yards of total offense in a 52-20 victory over Furman on Saturday that dampened …
County Signs: Off to the wilds of Laurens Academy
By MONTE DUTTON Moon over Todd Kirk Field (Monte Dutton photos) Click here. I went back and forth all week long. I wanted to go to Landrum, where I have never seen a football game but once played in a scrimmage. Also, I wanted to get to another Laurens Academy game because the Crusaders entered …

Catamounts pose next Furman challenge
By MONTE DUTTON Trey McLeod (Furman photo) Click here. Progress. Its definition is a burning issue in election politics. It’s simpler to process in college football. Progress means victory in Saturday’s 2 p.m. game between visiting Western Carolina and Furman at Paladin Stadium. Furman didn’t fare well on the home turf last week in a …
County Signs: A namer, a Hobson’s choice and a Mike Ayers
By MONTE DUTTON Click here. I can’t write well enough for people to read me anymore. It’s a common problem for those of my age. Maybe I’ll become a pharmaceutical namer. I could start with familiar adaptations. Paladinofed. Redevilac. Redsoxanyl. Many people don’t think it’s the World Series unless it’s the Dodgers versus the Yankees. …
