Panthers bite back quickly and often

INMAN – With 8:09 left in the first quarter, Brock Franklin kicked a 35-yard field goal that that gave Laurens the lead. Unfortunately, that was it.

Coleman Gray, the Chapman quarterback, completed 19/23 passes for 202 yards and four touchdowns, and his backup, Josiah Moore, was 7/7 for 44 and one.

Chapman (3-1) repelled the Raiders, 48-3, on Friday night. Laurens (0-4) has scored in every game, but that was the least.

The Panthers passed for 247 yards and rushed for 245. Laurens rushed for 120 and passed for 36.

Laurens quarterback Nick Danciu rushed nine times for 65 yards but completed only 11/26 passes for 36 yards. His longest completion in the game was 11.

The Raiders made five of their 11 first downs in the game on their first drive, moving from their own 28 to the Chapman 17, where they settled for the field goal. The drive lasted 14 plays.

Gray put the Panthers in front 2 minutes, 58 seconds later on Gray’s strike to Keanu Na.

The first quarter ended with Chapman leading 7-3, but the Panthers proceeded to tack on two touchdowns in the second quarter, three in the third and one in the fourth.

Chapman can be a volatile team, but only the two of seven touchdowns went for longer than 14 yards. Those were a Gray-to-Hudson Moss 54-yarder in the second quarter and Moore’s 37-yard strike to Shannon Black for the final points.

Next week Laurens (0-4) takes a shot at the first opponent it defeated last year, visiting Union County (0-4), which fell at home, 62-34, to Broome.

Laurens Academy defended its home field with a 36-34 win over Oakbrook Prep (of Spartanburg) that evened the Crusaders’ record at 2-2.

Ethan Collins completed 21/29 passes for 283 yards and four touchdowns.

Buddy Baker rushed for 144 yards in 23 carries, intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble.

In McCormick, the Chiefs won for the first time and left Thornwell still looking, 53-0.

Kaevon Washington rushed for 77 yards and hit 4/7 passes (though for -13 yards) in a losing cause.

The Clinton junior varsity had a long Thursday night in Aiken, but for the Green Hornets, it must have seemed like an eternity.

After a storm delay, the Red Devils proceeded to thrash Aiken, 30-0.

Eric Robinson picked up a fumble and scored. Cambre Colemand Jaydon Glenn intercepted passes. Kenyon Butler and K.J. Vance scored rushing touchdowns. Owen Glenn threw a touchdown pass. Safiye Tribble caught it.

“We played a solid four quarters,” stated Clinton coach Dontavius Glenn. “Our defense played extremely well, and everyone contributed to the win.”

Clinton improved to 1-1 with a 4-3 girls’ tennis victory over Mid-Carolina. Next up is the Region 4-3A opener versus Union County on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
