The pop heard ’round the state

Perhaps the most famous baserunning play in baseball history occurred in the seventh game of the 1946 World Series.

In the eighth inning, with two out, the Saint Louis Cardinals’ Enos Slaughter scored the winning run by dashing all the way from first base on a hit to left-center field by Harry Walker. The Boston Red Sox center fielder, Leon Culberson, threw to shortstop Johnny Pesky, who hesitated momentarily before throwing to the plate. Culberson had just entered the game due to Dom DiMaggio’s injury, which occurred when he drove in two runs in the top of the inning to tie the score.

That game went down in history as one of four Red Sox losses – 1946, 1967, 1975 and 1986 — in the seventh game of the Series. The so-called Curse of the Bambino lasted until 2004, when Boston finally won a World Series for the first time since Babe Ruth (the Bambino) was sold to the New York Yankees in 1919.

If Clinton (30-3) wins the Class 2A championship, Owen Glenn’s mad dash on Tuesday is going to go down in local lore. It didn’t decide the game – the Red Devils already led Atlantic Collegiate, 3-1 – but Glenn’s inside-the-park home run was an unforgettable moment.

William Addison, who had doubled to lead off the top of the sixth inning, was on third base. An attempted squeeze play by Graydon Watkins had rolled foul on a 1-2 count for the second out. Glenn hit a pop fly down the right-field line on the first pitch. ACA right fielder Cam Craft collided with second baseman Gavin Street, and the ball rolled to the fence as center fielder Logan Newcomb chased it down.

Glenn hustled all the way around the bases.

The play is just past the 1:45 mark on this video.

05/26/2026 – STATE CHAMPIONSHIP!!! – Atlantic Collegiate Academy v Clinton Highschool (Game 1)

What will magnify the play even more is if Clinton wins the state title. The Red Devils can do so with another victory over ACA (29-4) on Friday at 3 p.m., back at the home valley park. An Armada victory results in a decisive game on Saturday at Lugoff-Elgin, a neutral site.

WPCC (96.5 FM, largetime.net) will broadcast the remaining games live.
