Perhaps one reason writers struggle is that truth is getting progressively stranger than fiction.

Journalism is not really about telling the truth. It’s about getting as close to the truth as possible based on what people say the truth is.

If a man or woman wants to tell the truth, he (or she) has to write fiction.

Such is the time in which we live. It beats the Middle Ages. Civilization teeters over a chasm of ruin. At least see the humor and absurdity of it all.

Sports offer little relief.

Michigan beat Western Michigan by election fraud.

Louisiana State University signed two (truly) professional players. The Southeasten Conference rose in mock outrage. Lane Kiffin, doing his best Steve McQueen, told his charges to take no Clemson prisoners. The SEC threatens to kick the Bayou Bengals out. LSU backs off.

What is this? The Cuban Missile Crisis? Everyone take a breath. The president won’t have to send his son-in-law in. One SEC, the Securities and Exchange Commission, won’t have to investigate the other.

Now, if this were a movie, this is how it would end. Clemson would sign the two true pros. Cue the credits.
